An Innovative New Housing Model is Celebrated

Thursday afternoon featured grey skies and rain seemed likely at any moment. But, IHT and the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital were joined by over 30 people to showcase their partnership and an innovative new way to provide rental housing within financial reach of essential hospital employees. Everyone in attendance was undaunted by the chill in the air because they gathered in the big, warm, shared kitchen of the recently renovated Hanover House, a former inn in Vineyard Haven, to hear the story of how this came to be. West Tisbury has Created an Accessory Apartment Program

How can we create affordable housing and still preserve the character and open space of the island? One possible answer is the Accessory Apartment Program of West Tisbury (AAPWT) which was recently created with the help of IHT. Accessory apartments can provide extra income for property owners while helping to alleviate the affordable housing shortage.  Accessory apartments can also help year-round island residents secure housing and avoid the “island shuffle.” To learn more about how this program works please click on the link to the AAPWT website.

Our Year End Goal is to Raise $300,000 for the Hanover House

Partnering with the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, IHT is repurposing the historic Hanover House Inn in the center of Tisbury into year-round affordable rental housing for 15 income qualified hospital employees. Construction began in October and we’re shooting for a late Winter 2019 occupancy.  Read more about how your generous contribution will help provide safe, stable homes for the health care workers on whom we all rely.
